Innovative strength

The Munich Metropolitan Region is one of the most innovative regions in Europe. Its success is rooted in the close interplay between world-class research, innovative companies, an active startup scene, and a robust cultural and creative sector. Throughout the region—from urban centers to rural areas—networking, knowledge and technology transfer, and polycentric collaboration continuously give rise to new ideas, products, and solutions. This dynamic innovative spirit makes the Munich Metropolitan Region a forward-looking, highly competitive, and attractive location.

Innovative, dynamic, forward-thinking

For decades, the Munich metropolitan region has consistently achieved success. This is due in particular to the region’s innovative strength. This dynamic and inventive region benefits from an enormous locational advantage: the sheer number and high quality of innovative companies and scientific institutions throughout the Munich metropolitan region.

Whether in Munich, Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Rosenheim, or Garmisch: throughout the entire metropolitan region, the research activities of various industries and scientific institutions (including, for example, the Fraunhofer, Max Planck, Helmholtz, and Leibniz Institutes, etc.) are closely linked to the region’s 29 colleges and universities. Together with the cultural and creative industries, the startup scene, and technology transfer with existing companies, this region thus harnesses an enormous potential for knowledge and innovation that continuously produces new bright minds.

The innovative strength of the Munich metropolitan region is thus the key factor in its economic success and international reputation. This is demonstrated by a wide variety of international rankings. A study by KPMG has also confirmed that the current economic situation of the Munich metropolitan region is excellent. Nevertheless, there are several areas that require attention to further improve the region’s already strong position.  Based on a SWOT analysis conducted in 2023, a survey of key stakeholders, and the Innovation Conference, a comprehensive conclusion with recommendations for the Munich Metropolitan Region was formulated.
