Quality-Driven Transformation: wagnisWEST

On October 13, 2026, the European Metropolitan Region of Munich e.V. and the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations of the City of Munich cordially invited guests to the event “Transformation with Quality: wagnisWEST” in Munich-Freiham.

The “wagnisWEST” cooperative project received an honorable mention as part of the 2025 Munich Metropolitan Region Award for Building Culture under the theme “Transformation with Quality.” It is located in the heart of Munich’s new Freiham district. Through an intensive participatory process, the current residents developed the project guided by the central question: “What must be mine, and what can I do better as part of a community?” The result is 134 apartments with informal gathering areas, diverse common spaces, shared rooftop gardens, mobility options, a tenant-owned solar power system, and several commercial units. The project was realized in line with the principles of sustainability—minimal soil sealing, more green space, and a circular economy.

The event offered exciting insights into the project, interesting discussions with stakeholders in the built environment, and the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with representatives from politics, local government, business, and academia.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations of the City of Munich and to all project participants for the wonderful insights: wagnis eG, Wohngenossenschaft München-West eG, AllesWirdGut Architektur, and bauchplan ).( landscape architecture and urban planning.
